Dr. Mihaela Vlasea
Assistant Professor at University of Waterloo
Mihaela Vlasea is a new faculty member at the University of Waterloo, Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. She has professional and academic experience in designing and building complex mechatronic systems for additive manufacturing applications. At University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, she has developed a new class of powder bed binder-jet systems capable of fabricating variable porosity products ranging from bone and dental implants, to lightweight materials for aerospace uses. At the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Maryland she has collaborated on developing a laser powder-bed fusion system as a test bed for investigating new metrology and control approaches. One of the exciting projects that she is currently involved with is a collaborative venture with researchers, pathologists and orthopedic surgeons from Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto and University of Waterloo in manufacturing of bone substitute implants that can be seeded with live cells, and post-implantation, are replaced with the patients’ own tissue.
